My 1996 hasn't backfired once, except when I shut it off. It's not really a backfire, it's more like a thump but not loud at all. I think I read once that these big singles have this characteristic, just like the old BSA's etc.
The idle speed is supposed to be 1100 RPM per factory manual. 1500 sounds a bit high. Are you sure the backfires are carb-caused ?
